An MRI of brains

Watch: What happens to your brain when you die?

Death. Whether we acknowledge it or not, most of us have thought about death and it’s something that probably scares a lot of us. Death remains a great mystery, and is an issue that we as a population have struggled with since the beginning of human history, even though the act of dying is a natural part of our existence.

It is not something that we as humans discuss lightly, and surprisingly enough, it is not something that researchers and doctors tend to look into as much as other aspects of their jobs. Dr Cameron Shaw, The Director of Clinical Studies Geelong, at Deakin University, says that; ‘this is the nature of the medical profession. Our job is to prolong life, so talking about death is a bit like talking about our limits.’

Watch the video to find out what we do know about our brain in the final seconds before death.
