It’s that time of the year again; university Open Day advertisements are appearing on TV and around town. For some high school students, attending a university Open Day is a no-brainer, if it hasn’t been on your radar, you might be wondering what a university Open Day is (and if it’s actually worth the visit). So, what is a university Open Day, and why should you attend them? Should you attend more than one? Is it worth attending other university Open Days even if you are 99% sure which university you’re going to attend? We answer all of your questions below.
University Open Days are designated days where universities open their doors to prospective students and parents. They are essential when it comes to gaining a strong insight into the institution you’re considering studying at.
You’ll have the opportunity to speak with expert academics, teachers and current students. There will also be several tours and activities to get involved in throughout the day, where the university will showcase what they have to offer.
Studying at university is more than just attending lectures and classes. Open Day is also the best opportunity to get a feel for the campus and seeing it in ‘play’.
Universities have Open Days once per year. However, there may be multiple Open Days if the university has more than one campus.
Deakin University has three Open Days in 2024. There is one Open Day for each of the Warrnambool, Geelong and Burwood campuses.
All three Open Days are in August, with the first being held at the Warrnambool campus on August 4, followed by Geelong Open Day at the Waterfront and Waurn Ponds campuses on August 18, and then concluding with Melbourne Open Day at the Burwood campus on August 25.
Now that we know what a university Open Day is, let’s unpack why it’s worth attending.
Attending a university Open Day allows you to picture what studying at any given university – and on any given campus – will be like.
A good way to find the perfect fit is by attending a few different open days. This will enable you to compare universities and experience them in real-time, rather than simply reading about them online or in a coursebook.
Seeing the facilities – like science labs, motion studios and art rooms – in motion will also help you understand what your study experience may look like from a practical perspective.
So, what is the ideal age to start attending university Open Days?
Most school leavers will attend Open Days when they’re in Year 11 or 12, but there are benefits to attending at a slightly younger age.
Open Days are designed to provide you with an insight into university and give you a better understanding of the transition from high school to tertiary education.
If you’re unsure about what you want to study, ideas may stem from demonstrations you find interesting. If a particular course piques your interest, this may also be a good source of motivation and give you something to work towards.
There is still an abundance of information online if you aren’t able to attend Open Day in person. Remember Deakin is open all year!
